One of the New York Public Library's greatest treasures is a small, 112-millimeter diameter hollow copper globe, dating back to around 1510 and resembling the Jagellonico globe at the Collegium Maius Museum in Cracovia. The Hunt-Lenox globe is one of only two historical maps featuring the phrase 'HC SVNT DRACONES', indicating unexplored regions, and is considered the oldest to depict the Americas. Acquired in Paris in 1855 by American architect Richard Morris Hunt, it was initially deemed a mere curiosity. Upon recognizing its true value, Hunt gifted it to the Lenox Library, where it now resides in the Rare Book Division and is displayed in the Polonsky Exhibition.
